The light color of a lava lamp can be changed from red to blue, yellow, green, purple, or orange. However, the customization options do NOT correspond to the actual color of the object. I'm not sure if it is a glitch or even if Nintendo is aware of this. Here's a quick guide that'll show you what color you will get depending on your choices.
The default color of the lava lamp is blue. The corresponding option is red.
If you ask Cyrus to change the lamp to blue, he’ll make it purple.
If you want a green lava lamp, choose yellow.
If you want a red one, choose green.
Choosing purple yields a yellow lava lamp.
So choosing orange actually gives you an orange lava lamp!
The color of the lamps affects the color of the light in you house and it can be visible from the outside. I'm currently using a blue strained glass lamp, blue number one and purple lava lamp :)
